Victorian Shield – Association Croquet

Each year the Victorian Croquet Association invites players to participate in the Gold Cup, Silver Shield and Bronze Shield. Players are invited according to their current index ranking and the top 10 invitees play in the Gold Cup; the next 8 in the Silver Shield and the next eight in the Bronze Shield.

Williamstown was well represented in the Silver and Bronze events with Colin Clark in the Silver and Marie Calthorpe, Lowen Clarke and John Grieve in the Bronze.

The games were played over Saturday and Sunday at Cairnlea. The weather was fine and the lawns were fast and true.

Colin cut a swathe through his opposition winning all 7 games; triple peeling in one game and pegging out in 6 of the 7. Colin has now had his handicap reduced to 2.5 and will be looking to compete in more first class events in the months to come. Colin has worked tirelessly at his game and justly earns his success.

The Bronze Shield was won by David Wren (Essendon) with Brian Reither (Ballarat) runner up. Marie finished fourth winning four of her 7 games; John 5th and Lowen 7th.

Williamstown Croquet Club is rightly very proud of the successes its members achieve. We have one of the largest number of players regularly competing in VCA events. The Labour Day weekend will see Marie, Tony and John playing at Essendon.

Cairnlea Challenge - Golf Croquet.

Recently the Cairnlea Challenge was played and attracted a large entry including many from Williamstown. The event was played in three levels and Williamstown figured well in the final results.

In Event 1 Harry Wright finished second behind Ian Davidson from Elwood. Tony Green was third.

In Event 3 Len Twigg won with another Williamstown member Joe Hayes being runner-up. This is an exceptional result for Len who has only recently taken up croquet. We also note Len will be competing with Marna Freeland as a member of the two-person Association Autumn pennant season.

Once again our members are seeking to improve their skills and making a real mark on croquet in all forms in VCA and club events
